One of the filthiest jobs was stacking sacks of charcoal onto lorries. The dust from the charcoal choked the women and penetrated through layers of clothing to the skin, making the workers black all over. It was difficult for the women to get clean again, particularly given the wartime water restrictions. Pat did charcoal stacking, which she described as a ‘filthy, rotten job’ and also made roads:

There was a slope up into the woods and in the winter, when the rains came with lorries going up and down, it would turn into a quagmire…The boss said we must get a road built before the bad weather really hit us. So we went to a sawmill and picked up slats of wood…and laid these all the way up. Then we chucked tons of sawdust over it, so that it would eventually work down into the ground…
